First, stitches are cast on for the back. The back is worked back and forth with short rows to shape sloping shoulders, before being worked down to the underarms. Stitches are then picked up along each shoulder for the left and right sides of the front. New stitches are cast on between the front pieces before the entire front is worked back and forth to the underarms. The front is joined to the back, and the sweater is then worked in the round to the full length. Stitches are picked up around the armholes for the sleeves. The sleeves are worked in the round and finished with a larger needle to add a little width. The neckband is worked last.
