Sheep's wool

The sheep is one of the first domesticated animals humans have had, and wool has been an important material for thousands of years. Today, the sheep is a common grazing animal here in the Nordic countries.

Wool contains a lot of air and has a great ability to absorb moisture without feeling wet, which allows it to generate a large amount of heat and keep you comfortably warm even if it has become damp. But its special properties don't stop there. For example, wool does not allow dirt to penetrate the fibers but keeps the dirt on the surface, which makes wool clothing very easy to care for. Most of the time, you just need to brush them and air them out in fresh air to keep them clean. The oxygen in the air makes the wool clean itself; it loosens the dirt particles so they fall to the ground—and the garment feels fresh again.

Wool contains a fat called lanolin. It is the lanolin that gives wool its special properties, which help retain heat and make it both dirt-repellent and water-repellent. Lanolin also contains some water, which becomes apparent if you melt the fat. It then separates into two layers, one of fat and one of water.
