The Athene Sweater is knitted from the top down in stockinette stitch. The top part of the yoke is knitted in stockinette stitch. The patterned part of the sweater is knitted in the round on circular needles and split for the sleeves. You can also knit the patterned part of the yoke back and forth on circular needles so that you do not need to split the stitches.

First, the top part of the back is knitted back and forth, and the shoulder slope is shaped with short rows. Then, the shoulders are knitted back and forth individually on circular needles. They are then joined at the front to continue with the front piece. The front piece and back are then joined and continued with the body. Extra “split stitches” are added on each side so that the body can be knitted in the round in the pattern until the armhole is knitted. Then, the body is knitted in the round without split stitches and finished with a ribbed edge at the bottom. The double-folded neckline is knitted last from picked-up stitches.

Please note that patterned knitting often needs to be knitted on needles 0.5–1 mm thicker than stockinette stitch. Therefore, make a gauge swatch in both the pattern and stockinette stitch before you begin. You can use the sleeve chart for the gauge swatch.

Size Guide

The Athene Sweater should have approximately 20 cm of movement allowance (positive ease) in the smallest sizes, which gradually decreases in the larger sizes. Sizes XXS (XS) S (M) L (XL) 2XL (3XL) 4XL (5XL) correspond to a bust measurement of 75–80 (80–85) 85–90 (90–95) 95–100 (100–110) 110–120 (120–130) 130–140 (140–150) cm. The measurements of the finished sweater are given on the front of the pattern. Please note that these measurements only apply if the gauge is maintained. Measure yourself before you start knitting to determine which size will suit you best. For example, if you measure 95 cm around the bust (or the widest part of your body), you should knit a size M. A size M sweater has a width of 115 cm and will provide 20 cm of movement allowance (positive ease) in the example above. A size chart is available here.
