The alpaca originates from the Andes, where it lives at altitudes of 4,000–5,000 m in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia, but there are also smaller populations in, for example, Argentina and Ecuador. It is a camelid whose closest relative is the endangered vicuña, which lives wild in the Andes.
The wool is soft, warm, and has a beautiful luster. Alpaca is considered one of the finest wool fibers in the world.
The wool comes in 22 different natural base colors, ranging from black and reddish-brown to lighter shades of gray and white.
The yarns presented on this page contain all or part alpaca wool; other materials may also be present.
